Onyx comes from the Greek ὄνυξ onyx meaning 'claw' or 'fingernail'. With its fleshtone color, onyx can be said to resemble a fingernail. Onyx is a cryptocrystalline form of quartz. The colors of its bands range from white to almost every colour except shades of blue. It has a long history of use for hardstone and jewellery and was highly valued in Rome, especially for seals, because it was said to never stick to the wax.
